   Taishukan Publishing Co., Ltd. was founded in 1918 by SUZUKI Ichihei (1887-1971), the first Chairperson of the company. Beginning with the publication of learning-aid books for those preparing for examinations, the company has consistently pursued the publication of books relating to education, while expanding their base of publications to include textbooks approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (formerly known as the Ministry of Education).
   Representative publications include the “Dai Kan-Wa Jiten” (1955-60) by Dr. MOROHASHI Tetsuji (1883-1982). Universities and academic circles alike have acclaimed this comprehensive dictionary to be the “Greatest Dictionary of Chinese Characters,” and it continues to rank among the top dictionaries in the world.
   Other well-known publications are the “Genius English-Japanese Dictionary,” the “Meister German-Japanese Dictionary, ” the “Up-to-Date Encyclopedia of Sports,” the “Kogorin (Japanese Archaism Dictionary),” the “Meikyo Kokugo Jiten (Japanese Dictionary)” as well as monthly magazines, such as, the “English Teachers' Magazine”and the “Magazine for Teachers of Physical Education.” Many of these are available in a wide range of electronic formats.
   As of August 31, 2008, the company has a capital of 45 million yen, a total of 60 staff members, and publishes an average of 250 new titles and 300 reprints a year.
