「自己表現」をテーマにした入試問題は数多く見られます。ここではその具体例の一部を見てみましょう。

●清泉女子大学（2001年　英文）（一部） 　次のテーマについて英文で書け。与えられた解答用紙にできるだけ多く書くこと。 　One of the most wonderful experiences I have ever had in my life.. ◆解答例◆ 　One of the most wonderful experiences I have ever had in my life was winning second prize in a national art competition. It was in second grade at high school. The painting showed my family. I enjoyed painting it very much and my art teacher said it was very good. He suggested that I enter it in the competition. When he told me that I had won second place, I couldn’t believe it. My parents and I went to Tokyo for the ceremony and I got a silver cup. Every time I look at my prize, I remember that happy, exciting time.

●名古屋市大　（2002年　前期） 　次の質問に100語程度の英語で答えなさい。 　Do you have any specific long-term goals? What is one and how do you plan on reaching it? ◆解答例◆ 　One of the long-term goals, which I hope to achieve in the future, is to become fluent in Chinese. It is the language spoken by the largest number of people in the world. In addition, Japanese language, culture and history have been influenced a lot by China and Chinese. In order to realize my goal, I plan to study Chinese at university. I will also take evening classes at a language school and join an organization promoting friendship between Japan and China. Visiting China is another important part of my plan. In this way, I hope to come close to my goal.

■印象的なスピーチをするために 　教科書Lesson 16のTaskでは一年間の総仕上げとして短い「スピーチ」の活動を取り上げています。スピーチには，Introduction（出だし）- Body （本論）- Conclusion（まとめ）といった形式を抑えることも必要ですが，次の５つの“I”が必要だと言われます。生徒にスピーチを作成させる際にも，参考になるでしょう。 　Intelligible(わかりやすい)：聞き手の身になってわかりやすい表現を心がける。 　Informative（情報に富んだ）：例やデータなどを挙げて,話が具体的になるようにする。 　Interesting（面白い）：興味深いエピソードで聞き手の関心をひきつける。 　Interactive（相互的な）：聞き手に質問をしたり，共通の話題を取り上げて一体感を生む。 　Impressive（印象的な）：冒頭をインパクトのある話題で始めたり,引用を効果的に使う。 　以下,スピーチに役立つ補足表現をご紹介します。授業でお役立て下さい。 ・はじめのことば 　「…について私の考えを述べます」 　　Let me share some of my ideas with you about … 　「…について考えてみましょう」 　　Let us find out about … ・感想のことば 　「…は永遠に私の記憶に残るでしょう」 　　… will remain in my memory forever. 　「そのことはいつになっても忘れないでしょう」 　　I am sure that it will be the one I shall remember for many years to come. 　「彼の励ましのおかげでこの夢が現実になった」 　　Thanks to his encouragement, this dream became a reality. ・結びのことば 　「これで私のスピーチを終わります」 　　well, that’s all I have to say now. 　「…と指摘して私のスピーチを終わらせたいと思います」 　　I would like to wind up my speech by pointing out that … 　「…ということを強調したいと思います」 　　I would like to emphasize that … ・お礼のことば 　「ジョーンズ先生，先生のご親切とご指導，ありがとうございました」 　　I am really grateful to you, Mr. Jones, for your kindness and instruction. 　「いろいろとご助力くださり,なんとお礼を申し上げてよいかわかりません」 　　I don’t know how to thank you enough for all you have done for me. ・歓送のことば 　「ジャクソン先生はすばらしい英語の先生でした。先生がいなくなると私たちはとても寂しくなります」 　　Mr. Jackson has been our great teacher of English. 　　And we are all going to miss him very much. 　「クレイグさんがいなくなると寂しくなります。どうぞお元気で」 　　We’ll miss you, Craig, and best wishes on your future. ・お別れのことば 　「お元気で。こちらにお寄りの節は，いつでもご連絡下さい」 　　I wish you the very best. ■大統領の名（？）演説 引用されることも多い最近の名（迷？）演説としては，ブッシュ大統領が2002年１月29日に行った一般教書演説があげられるでしょう。その中で，ブッシュ大統領は“States like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world.”と言っています。悪の枢軸としてあげられた３国のうち，イラクについてはすでに戦争により政権崩壊がなされていますが，北朝鮮については今のところ，対話路線が維持されているようです。さて，もう一つのstateはどこだったかご記憶ですか。 （答・全文はコチラをご覧下さい）
