There is an Asian expression that reflects a cultural prejudice against individuality: “The nail that stands out is hammered down.” In general,East Asians are supposed to be less concerned with personal goals or achievements than are Westerners. Group goals and coordinated action are more often the concerns. Maintaining harmonious social relations is likely to (1)take precedence over achieving personal success. Success is often sought as a group goal rather than as a personal badge of merit. Individual distinctiveness is not particularly desirable. For Asians, feeling good about themselves is likely to be tied to the sense that they are in harmony with the wishes of the group to which they belong and are meeting the group's expectations. Equality treatment is not (2)assumed nor is it necessarily regarded as desirable.

What do you mean by “Asian values”? Among “Asian values,” hard work and good money sense are often emphasized, but there is nothing particularly Asian about these beliefs. They are beliefs that are also found in the West. In fact, they are basic Christian beliefs. They seem natural to poor and peasant communities everywhere.
Another so-called “Asian values” is a strong belief in the importance of education. But this, too, is part of Western culture. People from a wide variety of social and economic backgrounds in both the East and the West may be found to value the importance of education.
